Kambora Public School has taken a bold step in modern education design, transforming its classrooms and staffroom with Sebel's innovative, flexible furniture. Inspired by David Thornburg's learning space archetypes—Campfire, Watering Hole, and Cave—the school has created dynamic, student-centred environments that support collaboration, independent thinking, and personalised learning.
Kambora Public School, nestled in Davidson, New South Wales, has recently undergone a comprehensive refurbishment to enhance its learning environments. The project focused on upgrading the staffroom and classrooms across Kindergarten to Stage Three, aiming to create flexible spaces that maximise student engagement.
Principal Lydia Janabi collaborated closely with Sebel Furniture's Business Development Manager, Stephanie Cox, to bring this vision to life. The design strategy incorporated David Thornburg's learning space archetypes—Campfire, Watering Hole, and Cave—to foster dynamic and innovative educational settings.
A thoughtfully selected colour palette distinguishes each learning stage: navy and grey tones for Stage Three, teal or aqua and blue for Stage Two, and purple hues for Kindergarten and Stage One. The school retained its existing Postura® chairs, complementing them with new additions such as Twist’n’Lock™ tables, Create-A-Space benches, Cosmic Stools, Smart Softies™, and Pirouette tables.
For different learning modes within the space, clusters of StingRay tables, booth areas and high benches couples with ottomans, stools and Create-A-Pods were used in different areas of the rooms.
The Stage Three spaces were made up of curved Smart Softies™ with high Pirouettes which allowed students to have a tiered learning option. The Create-A-Space benches with cosmic stools were also grouped at the rear of the classroom. All the workspace tables were ordered in writeable tops and on castors to allow for flexible learning in different areas of the classroom.
For the Staffroom, a combination of Focus tables & upholstered Hobnob Sled Base chairs were used alongside Smart Softies™. The colour palette used was grey and teal toned seating grouped with white tabletops.
To achieve Lydia’s goal classrooms, Stephanie designed the rooms in our Floorplanner app which allowed her to see the space come to life in realistic, to scale environments with the right colour palette.
